Top 5 Art Books to Spark Your Creativity

As an artist, I'm always on the lookout for new sources of inspiration and learning. Sometimes it's through digital channels like YouTube or Skillshare, but other times I just want to flip through the pages of a colorful art book. So, today, I figured why not share my top five favorite art books that have really helped me step up my game in hand lettering and watercolor painting. Plus, they're also my go-to sources whenever I need a creative recharge.

First off, we've got "Hand Lettering for Relaxation" by Amy Latta. It was among the first books I grabbed when I discovered the world of hand lettering on Instagram. What's great about Amy’s book is how it gently guides beginners through different lettering styles, techniques, and even some pretty cool designs. I’ve actually bought several of Amy’s books, but this one is my favorite!

Next up is “The Happiness Project Mini Posters” by Gretchen Rubin & Clairice Gifford which is a delightful coloring book. With its thick paper, it accommodates a range of mediums, from markers to light watercolors. Each page features motivational quotes in stunning illustrations, making the coloring experience inspiring and uplifting.

My newest purchase, "Painting Calm" by Inga Buividavice, has been a wonderful addition to my collection of art books. This book doesn't just guide you in watercolor painting, but it invites you to find tranquility through your art. The techniques shared are simple yet effective in creating beautiful, calm-inducing pieces. It's been a welcome reminder of the therapeutic potential of watercolor painting.

Splash of Color” by Liz Libre of Linda & Harriett is another fab watercolor coloring book that's filled with high-quality pages. Whenever you're itching to paint but can't quite figure out what, this book comes to the rescue. Just pick your favorite colors and go wild – it's all about enjoying the process and letting art happen.

Last but definitely not least is "Show Your Work!" by Austin Kleon. It’s an essential read for any artist or creative person aiming to leave a mark in the digital era. Kleon's insightful and actionable tips aid you in navigating the creative world, sharing your work effectively, and building a vibrant online presence. The book's digestible format makes it ideal for referencing when you need a dose of inspiration.

Each of these books holds a special place in my artistic journey. Whether it's mastering the basics of hand lettering, the power of positive quotes, finding serenity in watercolor painting, embracing the spontaneity of art, or the importance of showing your work, these art books have guided me through various facets of my creative journey.

What are your go-to art books? Or, if you picked up one of my recommendations, what did you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Until next time, happy reading and creating!
